An alpaca named Flamboyant has made a dashing entry in the show ring.

The young Canterbury alpaca with rich bloodlines, Stoneleigh Flamboyant, confirmed its show winning pedigree by taking the top ribbon at a Waikato competition after collecting the national supreme title in September.

Flamboyant was among a team of alpacas taken by owners Chris and Liz Strack to the Waikato A&P Show, the second largest alpaca show after the Alpaca Association New Zealand (AANZ) National Show, and did not disappoint.

The light fawn intermediate female huacaya alpaca is a daughter of multiple national supreme championship winning sire Stoneleigh Valentino and won the supreme championship at the Hamilton show last weekend.

Chris Strack said they had wanted to test Flamboyant to ensure its win at the national show at Feilding was not a one-off.

"The show was judged by international alpaca judge Peter Kennedy, from Australia, who has just recently returned from judging in the United States. [We] wanted to test Valentino's progeny against the top North Island competition, under a top international judge."

Valentino's progeny did not disgrace themselves, winning four of the eight age group championships, two colour championships, two reserve championships, as well as Flamboyant's supreme champion title.

Kennedy praised the fineness, density and lack of guard hair in the animals and the uniformity of their fleece.

Liz and Chris took no intermediate males to this show, but Brenor Valerius, which was the champion intermediate male, is a Valentino progeny owned by a client who has used Valentino's stud services.

Strack said they were thrilled that Valentino had passed on its winning fleece characteristics to its progeny.

The Waikato wins follow Flamboyant's breakthrough result at the national show where it also won champion intermediate female and champion light fawn  titles.

Flamboyant  comes from a dam the Stracks bred and own, Stoneleigh Flamboyance, which won supreme national champion in fleece at the national show in 2009.

Valentino won four national supreme champion titles in breed, unmatched anywhere else in the world and also won the supreme champion national fleece award at the national show in Christchurch last year as well as many under-age titles. Valentino has since been retired from the show ring.

Other Valentino progeny  were also judged the reserve champion junior male, champion adult female and champion white, champion adult male, reserve champion adult male and champion mature male at the National Show.
